This is a free online tool that calculates how many tokens your text will use and estimates the cost across different AI language models like GPT, Claude, Gemini, and others. It helps you understand and compare pricing before making API calls.

A token is a piece of text that AI models use for processing. On average, a token is about 4 characters or ¾ of a word in English. The exact number varies by model and language. Learn more about tokens.

For OpenAI models (GPT-5, GPT-6), we use the exact o200k tokenizer for 100% accuracy. For other providers, we estimate based on measured conversion factors (typically ±10-20% accuracy). Claude models use about 1.5× the tokens of OpenAI for the same text.

Output tokens cost 3-6× more than input tokens because generating text requires significantly more computational resources than reading it. The model must compute possibilities for each output token.

No. All token counting happens locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your text is never sent to our servers or any third party. The calculator works completely offline after the initial page load.
