Methodology
How we calculate token counts, verify pricing, and ensure accuracy across 60+ LLM models.
Overview
AI Token Calculator provides token counting and cost estimation for Large Language Model APIs. This page explains our methodology for ensuring accuracy and transparency.
Token Counting
Exact Counting (OpenAI o200k_base)
For OpenAI models using the o200k_base tokenizer (GPT-4o, o1, o3, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-6), we use the official tokenizer implementation running in a Web Worker for accurate client-side counting.
Implementation:
- Official gpt-tokenizer library from OpenAI
- Runs entirely in your browser (no server calls)
- Matches OpenAI's API billing token counts
- Used for all OpenAI o200k models
Estimation (Other Providers)
For providers where official tokenizers aren't available in JavaScript, we use research-validated estimation factors:
| Provider | Estimation Method | Typical Error Range |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic Claude | 1.5× o200k count for English, 1.7× for code | ±10% |
| Google Gemini | 1.2× o200k count | ±8% |
| xAI Grok | ~1.0× o200k count | ±5% |
| DeepSeek | 1.1× o200k count | ±12% |
| Other Providers | Provider-specific factors | ±15% |
Content-Type Adjustments:
- Prose: Base estimation factor
- Code: +15% tokens (more structural characters)
- JSON/XML: +10% tokens (structured syntax)
- CJK Languages: Base factor (most tokenizers handle CJK efficiently)
Pricing Verification
Data Sources
All pricing data comes from official provider documentation:
- OpenAI: openai.com/api/pricing/
- Anthropic: anthropic.com/pricing
- Google: ai.google.dev/pricing
- xAI: x.ai/api
- DeepSeek: platform.deepseek.com/api-docs/pricing
- Plus official docs for GLM, Kimi, Qwen, MiniMax, and Mistral
Verification Process
- Initial Capture: Prices recorded from official provider pages
- Source Documentation: Each price includes source URL and capture date
- Regular Updates: Pricing checked at least monthly
- Flagging Uncertainty: Prices marked "VERIFY" when sources conflict or are unclear
- Community Feedback: User reports trigger immediate re-verification
What We Track
- Base input/output token prices
- Tiered pricing structures (volume discounts)
- Promotional pricing and expiry dates
- Peak/off-peak rates (DeepSeek)
- Prompt caching costs
- Batch processing discounts
- Reasoning token pricing (OpenAI o-series)
Accuracy Indicators
We show accuracy confidence for each calculation:
- Exact (o200k): Uses official OpenAI tokenizer, matches billing exactly
- High Confidence (±5-10%): Well-tested estimation factors
- Estimated (±10-15%): Standard estimation, typical for most providers
- Approximate (±15%+): Less validated factors, use with caution
Limitations & Disclaimers
What We Can't Guarantee
- Future Pricing: Providers change rates without notice
- Estimation Accuracy: Non-OpenAI token counts are estimates
- Special Cases: Fine-tuned models, enterprise plans, or custom contracts may have different pricing
- Rate Limits: We don't track API rate limits or availability
Recommendations
- ✅ Use our calculator for cost estimation and comparison
- ✅ Verify pricing on official provider pages before production
- ✅ Test with small API calls to confirm actual billing
- ✅ Set up billing alerts with your provider
- ❌ Don't rely solely on estimates for production budgets
